Jamie's degree apprenticeship – "An amazing opportunity"

11.08.2017

Jamie Meininger was immediately attracted to the digital degree apprenticeship because it enabled him to "learn while I work".

Jamie is a degree apprentice working at IBM as a Client Support Manager and studying at Queen Mary University London for a BSc degree in Digital & Technology Solutions.

In this short film, Jamie explains why, as a degree apprentice, he feels he gets the best of both worlds: "I’ve managed to learn a lot at university, meet new friends and interact with students who are just taking the normal university route. But it’s also great because what I’ve learned I’ve been able to use on a day-to-day basis in my job."

Degree apprenticeships come in different shapes and sizes; Jamie’s involves a weekly mix of 3 days at work "just like any other normal IBM employee" and 2 days at university. He says the work-study balance works very well, largely because of the support that he and his fellow degree apprentices receive from their managers and mentors at IBM and their lecturers at Queen Mary.

Jamie’s verdict of the degree apprenticeship so far? "An amazing opportunity, it’s given me great insight into what I want to do in the future."

This film is one of a series of video shorts to promote digital apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships, produced in association with GoThinkBig, the online career hub from O2 for young people aged 16-24.
